The Joys of a Smoke Shop Event

Last Thursday, West Michigan’s best smoke shop — Grand River Cigar — hosted its first-ever event, a marketing promo by the good folks at Xikar. The vendor rep provided an assortment of smoking accoutrements (torches, cases) and offered a special on per-stick and per-box sales of Xikar’s HC label.

I took advantage of the “buy four, get one free plus a Xikar baseball cap” deal. The cigars were reasonably priced — $11 each less 15 percent for my standing locker discount — and quite tasty. This was my first exposure to the HC Series line and I found them to be quite pleasant. I ended up with HC Series Habano Colorado churchills, 7×48 with a medium-full body, and enjoyed two of them that evening. The cigars burned cleanly and featured a smooth draw — not too harsh, with a semisweet finish and a good quantity of smoke. Certainly worth adding to the rotation.

Probably the best part of the event was the attendance. Sure, the Xikar vendor was friendly and raffled off products, but for the entire 4.5-hour stretch I stayed at the cigar lounge, there were rarely fewer than 30 people milling about. I broke out my bottle of Dalwhinnie and shared with an old college friend and a younger local priest, and enjoyed so much conversation that I was hoarse by the time I got home.

If your smoke shop offers events, make a point of stopping by. Seeing so many fellow cigar lovers in the same place leads to great conversation — plus, you may encounter new products or get great deals on products you already enjoy.
