The Kraken: Black Spiced Rum for Your Halloween Grog

Halloween. A time of costumes, candy and … punchbowls. Mmm, punchbowls.

Yes, you could certainly pour yourself some gin and soda into a giant dish, add a few floating things, and call it a “punchbowl.” We prefer a more creative route: A mix that will put hair on the chest of every pirate at your party and loosen the pantaloons of every fair maiden who imbibes it.

Try this recipe, using The Kraken, a black spiced rum that’s sinfully tasty:

  • 1 bottle (750 mL) of The Kraken
  • 2L diet 7-Up
  • 8 oz. apple brandy
  • 6 oz. crème de cassis
  • 4 oz. blood-orange liqueur (Solerno)
  • 2 oz. elderberry liqueur (St. Germain)
  • 1 oz. absinthe
  • 1 tsp powdered cinnamon (for flavor as well as the glazing effect on the surface)
  • 1 tsp orange bitters

Mix well; refrigerate. Serve over ice. Add a chunk of dry ice to the bowl to give it a fog-like appearance. Add fun items (e.g., gummy worms) to enhance the ghoulish appearance of the brew. Consider slices of orange, apple, cherry or pineapple as desired, for garnish.

Warning: This will be potent. The flavor will be sweetly spicy, with hints of citrus and a subtly bitter aftertaste. Don’t say we didn’t warn you; drink too much, and the trick will be on you. And probably your shoes, too.
